I have a 242 with the old gear cut, and a 249 with the new gear cut. I have swapped the inputs before. What else do I need to swap over to make it work.

I wish I would have read this before I did the swap!

just finished up putting the 242 in, was pretty straightforward since it was from a 96. only thing I swapped over was my 3.73 speedo gear (I guess I should swap it back over)

I had to use the donor driveshaft because the one from mine bottomed out and I couldnt even fit it on the axle yoke. however, the donor shaft is about halfway on the output shaft, from the looks of the wear marks, it seems like it is about 1" further off than when it was on the donor. id say it has about 2" on the splines, think it will be OK?

I dont know what to do otherwise.

but anyways, the 242 shift rod is about 1" longer, but I didnt use it, I reused all the 249 stuff except the tab on the TC. shifts into all gears fine, but its on the edge of the adjustment rod. I assume the longer shift rod would place it more towards the center of the adjustment rod. wouldnt make any difference in how it shifts....

just have to do the VIC wiring and modify the bezel to use a XJ bezel pattern.

you need to swap the 249 front case onto the 242. I was going to do that but I knew if I opened them up, id end up rebuilding it and buying a new chain, so I just bought another 242 from the proper year to save some money and time

just the tab on the transfer case. the one on the 429 is too long. but all the linkages and whatnot on the jeep is fine. the 249 gate doesnt have the zig zag shift gate pattern that 242s have, but it will go into all the gears just fine.

Interesting. On my 5.9 w the 46RE i used the stock rear drive shaft, there was maybe 1" of travel left before it bottoms out. I left it like that since i went with a 2" lift & never had an issue

must vary from rig to rig or something because I dont think my stock shaft would even fit

see my quote above. maybe ill go under tomm and hold my original shaft up again and see how it looks. but the way I see it, id rather have a shaft fall out over having a shaft bottom out....
