Before 96, 4.0s used the .840" input and possibly the .750" input, depending on which tranny they had, I think. V8s used the long input (around 1"). In 96, all engine and tranny combos changed to the .840" input.

Is it possible to replace my 231J with a 249J in my 1993 Laredo? Also, my currently installed 231J does not show as shifting into "4 Full Time", but only Part Time. Is this normal?

That's normal. Your transfer case does not have Full Time, as it is not a 242. Your case has 2hi, 4hi part-time, neutral, and 4lo (low range) part-time.

So it says that the external slip yoke is generally found on 96 and newer jeeps, so does that mean I shouldn't have a problem with the driveshafts being as how the tc I'm getting is from a 99 Cherokee and my zj is a 98?

no, cherokees are shorter wheelbase. you need a rear ds from a ZJ with a 4.0 and an external. or you can get your ds shortened. the esy is exactly 1.5" longer than the isy

I am gonna be pulling a 242 out a pre 96 ZJ 4.0 at the JY and was wondering what should i look at or worry about. I will be getting the Transfer-case, front and rear driveshafts, shifter and bazel, and the front axle with the U-joint style shafts

I have a 97 ZJ 5.2 in which the previous owner installed a 231 I believe (2wd, 4 hi, n, 4 lo) out of an XJ (he had to swap shafts if I recall). In 2WD it's fine, but when in 4 HI or 4 LO, the VIC displays 4WD Switch and beeps every few seconds. What might be the fix? Do I need to find a different switch or do I need to change the connectors behind the VIC? I haven't really looked into it as I haven't driven it much in the 6 months I've owned it.

For a 231, the whole case is shorter than a 242 or 249, hence why the external slip yoke isn't longer. The 1/2" should be fine with your current DS.

I have a problem. I swapped my speedo gear but the speedometer doesnt work. The gears arent the same. I was going to just swap them but the shafts are different lengths. I tried tapping the shaft out of the gears but it didnt work. Anybody have a solution? I need the green gear in the black housing
