You drive a tj, we drive a zj. We have more power while you get more shower. We get the v8 while you get there too late. You have 2 doors well, we have 2 more. Ours costs a grand while yours has a price we cant stand.

Happy Holiday guys, got a question I can't find an answer for.

I've done the 249 to 231 swap before in my 98 5.9 but a friend just brought me his 93 GC and a 2002 GC 242 to swap in.
Input length is correct but the tailshaft housing does not have a speedo hole, can I just swap the tailshaft housing from the 249 to the newer 242?

Looks like I can do it, lining it up side by side, the position of the circle clips look close enough that I think the housing swap will work. If for some reason it doesn't line up can I bolt the housing on without the circle clip to retain it? Will the bolts on the housing be enough or does the circle clip serve some other function?

Thanks for any help!

HOW MUCH is that to ship to Hawaii!!!???

Is it possible to swap the tailshaft housing? See my post above.

The WJ main shaft likely doesn't have the speedometer gear like the 94+ 242 does seeing as it didn't use it whatsoever. You could always crack one open and check.

Thanks, yep did that very thing this evening. I had the 2002 242, an 89 231 and a 93 249.

The output shaft from the 02 does not have any provision for the speedometer gear, its splined about 4-5 inches and then the shaft is a nice polished finish.
The 93 249 tailshaft housing will not fit the case either, its too wide. The 231 fit but would not bolt up, the housing did not have the 4 bolt holes, instead it had 5 10mm torx head bolts. Maybe a newer case with the correct bolt pattern would fit but I didn't have any around. Its pointless anyway because of the no speedo provision but at least I answered my own question.

As for swapping the case I took the .84 input shaft from the 249 and installed it in the 231. Bolted up and works with no problem. I need to adjust the linkage a little because it grinds coming out of 4lo. My friend is stoked to have a working 4x4 again.

TC Question

Hey, I'm hoping Somebody Can answer my question. I'm looking at buying a 231 transfer case out of a 99 Cherokee 4.0 for my 98 zj limited 5.2. Would anybody be able to tell me what the chances of the input shafts being the same length are?

Should swap right in, minus driveshaft issues.

my 5.2L is a .840"

Pre 96, they were. In 96, everything switched to the 0.840" input.
