No way! I'm still shopping around hopefully i can find a deal too!!

I need to figure some things out as far as compatibility. I really want to put a NP242 HD from a dodge in my 94 zj. Because of the higher torque ratings. I'm still unclear what if any modifications i need to do to make it work.

Thanks for the $ info!

Thats the best deal I've found. Another yard here wants $150 which still isn't too bad.
Sometime in december I will be doing this swap myself. Good luck

There are a bunch of aftermarket upgrades for the 231, and while I have yet to see one for the 249, I would bet that the same upgrade kit would work for both. Of course thats a bit like putting lipstick on a pig, but it could probably be done.

For $500, they better pull it, polish it, and guarantee it for give years. Lol Thats pretty high! I got my 231 out of s cherokee from a pick-n-pull place for $100

I finally got some numbers of my t case:

Model: 249
Assy No: 5209 530
Seral No: 228 94
Ratio: 72

The swap I am looking for a NP242HD. I want to make sure I buy the right one!?

My vehicles manufacturing date after looking up my VIN was 3/02/94. I Have not been able to pull it out to check the gear cut or anything yet because i drive it. Hopefully I can get my swap purchased after i put everything in order!

Thanks for all the help in advance everyone!

no, you probably have the 44rh, and you have the 23 spline 1.55" input shaft, so you got that part right. you will need a pre 94.5 242 or 231 out of an xj or zj. you will need to swap the input shaft with the one in your 249. there is no t-case that is a direct swap. the input shaft swap is the minimum you will need to do to make them compatible

WRONG. He has the 46RH (44rh doesn't exist, in jeeps anyways). To the poster, look at the first page. It has everything you need to know as, JrMechanic was in the same situation.

alright. I didn't know if it was the same for a v8 46rh setup. ok so I should be able find a direct swap for mine then, just make sure it has the 1.55 length input shaft and I wont have to bust it open, right? Would it still matter what year my new TC is from if that's the case?

If you're not swapping inputs, it doesn't matter what year the t-case is from. However, you've still gotta stay with 95 and older, as all 96+ cases have the .840" input, regardless of tranny.

Medio-
i just started pulling the 249 of her 94 and just like you that sob would not come the **** off I even hooked a winch ad chain to it nothing I drug the 94 across the driveway it was a croted stud holding it on finally got it off

So im throwing this 98 242 in both inputs art 7/8 inch long
got 2 questions
1 is it normal for tranny fluid to pour our tranny when tc is removed
2 what jack *** put motor oil in the 242tc and will it hurt it?

Im off to buy moar atf4 now

Ok thank you. Thats what I was thinkin I just wanted to double check with someone. I knew there was a cutoff for the newer cases like that just didn't know what year, now I know. Well...off to the JY to look for a 231 with the 1.55. But I found this--https://www.drivetrain.com/parts_catalog/transfer_case_replacements_and_parts/jeep.html#GRANDCHEROKEE
Looks like I'll be swapping the input shaft regardless, as it looks like my 249 is the just about only one with the 1.55" input? Unless I can grab a 242 out of a 93 zj. I was really looking at the 231 tho.
