OK so i see that the inputshaft from the 249 is bit longer then the 242 ao i will swap it. i see only few bolts......i just take those out and wwap? also what would be the torque for it....and do i get a new seal for that? and how do u name that seal
you have to tear the case completly down to remove the input, like i said before, read the first 2 pages of this thread

i jsut swapped from 249 to 242. if u look between 93 and 95 u should be ok.. u will have to change input of where it connects to the tranny...simple take the one form ur tc put it into the new one. when i had found a 242 i looked up the numbers to match like product numbers... cant get the correct word out. but u should not have to swap drive shafts i believe as long ur doing it in the same years (93-95) but thats for an swapping to 242 i dont know for 231

From what I know, that's a bolt on deal. Input gear should be the .840" one. Speedometer stuff will swap over. Driveshafts may be different. The range sensor wiring can be made to work.

Good luck with the install and with finding a matching bezel!

Ok. after reading this thread and installing one bad 249 into my Jeep, I took the plunge and bought a '94 242 from a Cherokee Sport. To my surprise and delight, the process of putting the input shaft from the 249 into the 242 was not that hard. The trickiest part was getting the shift fork out. A few pots of coffee, some various mumbling and cursing, and 3 trips to the parts store and now I am driving around in 2wd! Thanks to everyone on this forum for all the input and tips. Go jeepforum!!

Just a word of warning to those whom are going to attempt this: Change all the seals (output for transmission, input for trans case) while you have everything apart. I had to do a front case swap, and since nothing leaked before I figured I wouldn't touch the seals since both were going back together....

Picked up new seals tonight, gonna have to drop it again to fix a slow leak (1-2 drops a day)

Any recommendations on changing them? Is the one on the transmission just pop out and push the new one on?

yes it is its kinda tight but i pried it out side by side and lubed it. when u put the new one in clean out the housing and lube it a bit makes it alot easier i had to hammer it softly but if u haveto use an rubber hammer or put a fodled rag on it preventing damage.

Picking up my early 94 242 t/c end of this week, early next week to swap into my 93 5.2L auto GC Ltd.

Thinking of doing the swap up at the cottage on Thanksgiving weekend (Canadian), since there's a workshop up there.

What else should I be picking up for this job?
RTV, fluid, output trans seal, input t/c seal....

I'm gonna clean the 242 up, and take it apart once I get it (to familiarize myself), so it'll be a quick input swap.

Thanks

Mediokrates- I picked up a set of seals for the TC and one for the tranny. On install of the tranny seal, I bent the lip and went back for another. I did find, however, that if you use never seize and a piece of 2" pvc to drive the seal in, it goes much smoother than trying to tap it on with a mallet. The third trip was simply for ATF +4. This is my first Jeep so I only had Dexron in the garage. That being said, on the dipstick of the tranny it says that dexron II is acceptable. Can anyone confirm that it is ok to run dexron in the tranny?
