i have a 95 zj awd. 5.2 with 46rh trans and 249 t-case. so what exact 231 do i need to find and what years. is there alist of everthing i need. im putting d44 in front and 9'' in the rear. building my own long arm with custom crossmembers and want to make sure the trans and t cases are in b4 the fabwork starts. i dont want to do it twice. thans in advance for info.
p.s im new to the jeep world so bare with me on the stupid questions.
i think a rubicon with the 4:1 is also a 231. is this possible to put in. or can i upgrade the earlyer 231 with a different ratio. i dont mind spending alittle extra to find a good rubicon one if i need to.
ok im wrong with the rubicon being a 231. sorry. but on that i could just put the tera 4:1 in it correct.

Go easy on the caligiuri, he's a good dude with a lot of mechanical knowledge that doesn't always come across due to 2nd language issues.
This thread could really use a moderator to thin it down, there's a lot of excellent info plus thirty pages of confusion.
thanks buddy. i know sometimes i sound stupid but i kinda already rebuilt my 94 jeep already. im well known in mechanical work but to explain it in english can be hard sometimes. btw frontend does well!!!! still some noises but tc is on its way im looking for a 242 but i already found 2 231's trying to figure out if it would fit an what i would have to adapt
Hi im new to this forum but I just gota 94 jeep zj and I love it.. it hasthe awd transfer case where the only positions are 4wd all time nuetral and 4low and I wanna swap it with the np242 and I was jw is it just a straight sway or do I have to swap out other stuff.... btw my jeeps the 4.0 i6... any helps aprecitaed just didn't wanna read all the stuff on the first page lol
so i am pulling a 242 thursday in newton. they have like 14 of lol imma pull the cleanest. the jeep looks like an 97 or 98 so i have to lokok at the 23 spline count but do i need the shafts to the front and rear too? rear shaft on that jeep has a boot by the tc. also i have to get that bezel but do i need to make adjustments or is it just the black plastic.....or also the white underneath.
You're much better off pulling a case from a 93-95 ZJ, or a 94 or earlier XJ. With the 96+ case you will have to have your already short rear drive shaft shortened, and you will have to deal with a front case swap to change inputs. Much more trouble than it's worth.
aaa hthanks ill check for sure what year it is. anyway if i would have a 242 from a 93-95 and the spline count is 23 do i have to change shafts then??? driveshafts i mean?
also i want to know about my shifter.......im thinking taking the bezel out with also that white part udnerneath and put it in mine......any suggestions?
got my 242 yesterday from a 93 all good!!!! 150 dollars including the front driveshaft.
OK so i see that the inputshaft from the 249 is bit longer then the 242 ao i will swap it. i see only few bolts......i just take those out and wwap? also what would be the torque for it....and do i get a new seal for that? and how do u name that seal
