If the input shaft is the same length you should be able to just bolt it in there.

Piece of cake.

I have a 231 sitting here waiting to go in the place of a 249 myself.

Is there anyway to find out the length without dropping the case? Because if I take the transfercase out its not going back in lol

read the first 2 pages of this thread for the both of you, all your answers are there, if you can't find them then ask the question but everything is pretty much covered

Go easy on the caligiuri, he's a good dude with a lot of mechanical knowledge that doesn't always come across due to 2nd language issues.

This thread could really use a moderator to thin it down, there's a lot of excellent info plus thirty pages of confusion.

zj t case

i think a rubicon with the 4:1 is also a 231. is this possible to put in. or can i upgrade the earlyer 231 with a different ratio. i dont mind spending alittle extra to find a good rubicon one if i need to.

ok im wrong with the rubicon being a 231. sorry. but on that i could just put the tera 4:1 in it correct.

You're much better off pulling a case from a 93-95 ZJ, or a 94 or earlier XJ. With the 96+ case you will have to have your already short rear drive shaft shortened, and you will have to deal with a front case swap to change inputs. Much more trouble than it's worth.
