since vc is kinda expensive i go for this.
i have an 94 grand cherokee limited 5.2
not sure what year the 242 comes from but i have to check ONLY the shaft that goes to the tranny right??
should be 23 ????

also thinking of the shafts.
my front drive shaft has an 'extendable' part on it just befor e the diff.
does this matter etc??
and prob i will have to take that bezel to right?
since thats also 2wd i only have 4high and 4 low

also im gonna take the antenna and the left front blinkerlight

i have read the whole post and explains alot but just making sure incase i read something wrong

edit; in the door the plate says manufactured 93 but title says 94 and i just bought axles for the front all based on 94 so i think ill stick with 94 since that is everywhere except on my plate in the door.
You have to swap input shafts regardless of the case for your application.

Want to swap an NP242 or NP231 into your ZJ? Here's how:

yes, but you bacically have to completely tear down the case to get to it, once you get the case open alot of things you have read will make more sense

OK, so I have a really bad NP242 in my Jeep. I was running it with low fluid (unknowingly) and the shop said the fluid looked really bad like it had been overheating a lot. They didn't open it up but they said it needs to all be replaced. My question is this: in 2wd can I move it about 3 or 4 miles to my girlfriend's parent's driveway to park it as-is without breaking something else? I'm parking it because I'm looking for a used 242 for 100-150 bucks...the shop quoted 1600 for a new one which is totally out of the question...but its difficult to find an exact match for my jeep. I found one in the Dallas area but it doesn't have the 23 spline input shaft....

So if you guys know anything please PM me, I'm stranded in Dallas until I find a correct 242...I'm in college and my parents aren't happy about me not having a car to get back to Houston...

Does it make any noise while its in 2wd? If no then I would say you could move it 6 miles. Whats it doing thats bad? Have you tried changing the fluid?

Do you have a local Jeep club? If so, maybe they can help find you a TC.

You could also try searching the classifieds on CL, Ebay or other Jeep clubs and get one shipped. I bet with a little work you could find one for $200 with shipping.

I took it to a shop because my original problem was that my jeep after 30 minutes of city driving would start to slip and shift later, it would struggle going up hills even after downshifting. I had it in 4wd full time for the past few weeks...probably stupid on my part since it was such an old tcase that was basically unused before...but anyway I took it to the shop, said nothing was wrong with the tranny, but they said the tcase had been leaking and it was low on fluid, the fluid condition was terrible and they said it had been overheating...they quoted $1600 for new internal parts...said something about the oil pump and chain being bad.

I've been doing extensive searching and I haven't found anything really yet...basically all I can do now is park my jeep until I find one. The shop never took it apart and just filled it with new fluid.

Hows the tranny fluid look? Check the level in neutral. So, the TC isnt doing anything wrong?

The tranny fluid looks and smells fine, fluid level is fine. I haven't really checked the fluid in the tcase, the shop looked at that. I need to go back and maybe drive it around the block to see what's up...I don't hear or feel anything wrong with anything except what I described after 30 minutes.
