From everything I've read, the change was between 94 and 95.

if u use the tj case ull have to swap the front output yokes. tjs used different front driveshafts i think

Yeah, I missed where he said TJ. I it was either the front output yoke or the splines on the drive shaft were different.

Okay guys, I updated this thread with a freaking TON of information, as well as a whole different swap. It now covers swapping inputs, as well as the information on gear cuts and input shaft length.

I ask that anyone who has done this swap make suggestions and or give input on this thread.

I have some pictures, but I won't be adding them until tomorrow. I just spent two hours revising this, and it's time for bed.

Well I finished up the 242 swap today. Tested everything out and it seems great Did a nasty burnout too.

I was told there's a revised part for the bushing that atatches to the body for the transfer case linkage. Anyone have a part number for it? The bushing is bad on both mine and my buddy's ZJ's.

Are you sure?? I have read a lot of other places that my '98 ZJ V8 will have the 1.55" input. I have a '93 231 23-spline with the .840" and if what you say is true, it should swap right in without having to change inputs. I am really tempted to just pull my 249 and measure. It seems to be the only surefire way to know.

I understand what he said. I have just read up a lot on this topic and everyone else has been giving conflicting information. If it is completely true that ALL ZJs, no matter what engine, have the .840 input, then that makes the PITA input swap unnecessary for us 96+ V8 owners. I think I have read every t-case swap thread and I grew into the understanding that I needed to swap inputs. I want to be sure because this is my DD and toy all in one.

96+ V8 ZJ's are known as the easiest swap as 96-98 4.0/Selec-Trac combos are very common, and they both share the .840" input shaft.

93-95 V8 ZJ's are generally a PITA because they all have the 1.55" input shaft.

I just added a few pictures to the original post.

hello, a few days ago we make the tc swap from a 97 Cherokee to my 98 GC. No problem, it was an easy job without any mods on the tc. Just pull out the 249 and put in the 242. After adjusting the linkage everything works fine. Thank you for the infos of this thread, it helps me by giving me the kick to do this mod. Ps sorry for my bad english, school time is far away.Dany.

Glad I could help, that's why I took the time to make this thread
