Does it say 95 on the case or are you going by the year of your Jeep?

I dont know what AT I have, but the car is registered in 1992, the shifter sais 1.2, 3, D, N, R, P and its a 4.0 I6. The transfer case is a 249.

I can also get a 242 from a 1990 XJ a lot cheaper, but that one has the 21 spline input right?

So, which one to buy?
Depends on the transmission. You need to find that out first.

How can I find out, without removing the TC?

The metal tag will say "9x x". Replace x with whatever I says.

I just swapped a 242 in for a 249 in my 94 limited. I found the red and black wires, just like in the pictures, I unhooked the red and plugged in the black, but nothing happened. My VIC just says "Service 4WD switch".

What should I do?

Sorry for the confusion. When I talk about the build date and gear cuts, that is when swapping the input shaft from the inside of the old transfer case to the new one.

There are instances when this is not necessary if you're lucky. Your Jeep could have either the AW4 or 42re, thus having either the .750" or .840" input shaft.

So, really, you're going to have to pull the case currently installed in your Jeep off to see how far the input sticks out past the housing. If it is the same on each case, it should be a direct swap, which would be good news!

Did it say service 4wd switch before?

Done!

I done this swap 249-->242 this past weekend with no problems what so ever!! The 96 zj limited w the 249 has a .840" input shaft, I said that cuz I'm sure someone is searching for right now! I scored a 242 out of XJ with a build date of 1/96. It fit perfect. Only question I have now is about the linkage, I have F***ed with the old 249's linkage all week and I still can't get it right, the shaft that the linkage pivots on is almost completely screwed now that to my hard headedness "if it don't work make it work" ideas. Any suggestions???? Nydriver could not of done this with your tread thx

@Rob, awesome! You honestly got lucky. I've never seen a 95 with the .840" input. That was 96 and up thing. Nice find.

Every case I've seen has been like that. I'm assuming it's from the forging process. As long as it's not cracked all the way through, you're fine.

It wouldn't properly seat against the output shaft/seal of the transmission and bad bad things would happen.
