Whatsup guys, i have a 96 v8 zj with the 249, and i just picked up a 242 out of a 96 zj for my swap. However, where the rear drive shaft would go is different. I read this thread and im guessing my zj has an internal shaft, and my new tcase has an external shaft. Can someone verify that based on these pictures...

Also, what can i do to make my new 242 work with my jeep? If it helps the build date on the 242 is 96 1 and my current tcase appears to be 96 6, but the last digit is pretty beat up, i think its a 6.

You got lucky. That's a direct swap, as long as the 242 came from a Grand Cherokee. The rear output shaft on the 242 is a bit longer than the 249, so you may need to cut off .75" to prevent bottoming out.

wow, thats good news thanks. But hows my drive shaft going to connect to my new tcase? Im guessing that one piece, with the ujoint, comes off my old t.c and goes on the shaft of my new one?

Same as the old. It just slides on and off. The boot (black rubber thing) goes over the yoke and just ziptie it secure when you get everything bolted up.

You don't have to take the front ujoint out to do this. Just the one at the axle.

so couple of specific questions.
i'm swapping in a 231j from a 99xj w/ same input shaft length thankfully.

A. I plan on doing a SYE as i have 4 in. RC lift n a ford 8.8 in rear. however, Is there a way of telling how long of a driveshaft to order? this is my DD so i can't just install the 231 and then wait for the driveshaft to get here.

Secondly has anyone figured out how to wire in the 231 shifter sensor (2prong) with the 249 sensor (4 prong)? and would i have to disconnect the black wires and connect the red ones in the back of the VIC to do so? Even if it only works partly that's better than not at all.

Also, was thinking about doing some upgrades to the 231 before I install it...i've read about wider chains, and a bigger planetary. Are these upgrades worth the money? I may plan on a 5.9 with built top end later but for now i just have a stock 5.2.

What is the best SYE kit out there i've looked at novak, advance adapters, tom woods. Which would be the best option, also are the super short SYE kits really worth it in a zj?

so i pulled my 242 out of my 5.2 and stuck it in my 5.9 today, but when i switched the wires for the VIC all i can get is full time lit up.

Any ideas?

also the shift sensor in my 249 was on the other side of the case, the 242 is near the spedo sensor, is that normal?

i dont think that would work unless you swapped back to a post 95 input?????
93=5.2 and 1.55" input
98=5.9 and .840 input
right?

the case i had was a .75 (if that exists, slightly shorter than one that was in the niner)

but i never swapped inputs for the 5.2, i just measured it up, and there were just enough seal engagement, so i bolted it up and hoped for the best, and 20,000 miles later there wasn't any leaks.

If you can find the overall length of a 231 with the SYE you choose installed, you can measure from the flange on the 8.8 to the output shaft of the old transfer case, then subtract the difference you get with the SYE. You could also install the case and drive around with it in 4wd. As long as you aren't flooring it everywhere you go you won't have an issue for a week or two while you wait for a drive shaft.

As far as upgrades go, there isn't much that can be done to a 231 other than a wide chain kit and a SYE. The torque handling characteristics don't go up much with the wide chain kit and isn't worth the money IMO unless you're out to get every last ounce of strength you can out of it, or you're do for a chain and feel like upgrading.

I'd also stick with a traditional style SYE, the super short SYE's are for super short wheel base applications that need every bit of rear drive shaft length they can get. JB conversions, Tom Woods, Advance Adapters, Novak, etc. all make a great SYE kit. I'd suggest to go with whatever you can get the cheapest.

Want to swap an NP242 or NP231 into your ZJ? Here's how:

That's all you'll get. The case design and sensor location changed, I'm assuming in 95. My 92 XJ 242 has the mode sensor on the tailcone. It rides off of the shift rail, versus the shift sector like the newer ones.

I've run into the same problem with my 96 (which has said 92 xj 242 in it). I use the full time light as telling me not to drive on solid surfaces. When full time is lit up, the case is in part time.
