Anyone know what this hole is ? I drove an hour to pick up a 97 NV242 and i noticed there was some kind of hole by the shift plate on the transfercase. I couldnt find this hole on my 249, so i decided to take a picture and drive back home before i bought it.

Could anyone tell me what this is ?

The hole does not look normal. I would stay away.

Rowdie, I have a front DS off my 5.9, if you were closer I'd say come get it. Since I went to a differnt TC and double cardons I don't need it anymore.

I can't see the picture since I am at work. However, I would *GUESS* that the hole is the access hole to the roll pin in the shift rail. The 242 has this hole, the 249 does NOT (since it only has a single shift fork).

I guess what I am saying is that if the picture is of what I think it is, this is perfectly normal. A little rubber plug normally fits in this hole. I will check the picture when I get home and I don't have a super-restrictive firewall blocking my access.

^ yes that hole is normal. my 242 had this same hole its fine. find a way to plug it and you'll be fine.

The factory rubber plug is still available from Mopar. It was like $3 if I recall. My 242 rebuild kit also came with one. I bought the one off ebay.

When I did my 242 swap, the housing on the 242 was cracked, so I had to use the front shell of my 249. I put a drill bit in the 242 hole to establish the size, then drilled a hole in the same location on my old 249, then reused the pug, securing it with RTV.

Wondering about this and not being a wise guy, could it be because your 6" lift???

Just bought a 242 (going to rebuild it JIC) to replace the 249 in my V8 '97, so I'm curious. Haven't had any luck finding a ZJ ESY 242 DS at the pick-a-parts.

Seems to me that if the ESY TC is 1.5" longer there could be a problem specially if one is running a D44 HD (been told those too are a bit longer than the 35's) and sitting at stock height.

Not saying it can't work but probably giving up a bit of DS slip distance.

Anyway great writeup JrMechanic, thanks for doing it and keeping up with it.

My ZJ has the 242 and thats at stock ride height. XJ have the 6.5" lift with a 231 and SYE

Here is my case installed on my 5.9 It has 3/4"-1" before the yoke would bottom out on the shaft. Has been this was since about october and it is my daily driver. No issues at all.

I orderd a new VC instead, decided id rather keep the AWD option rather then getting a different case.


The one I orderd says its for 91 and up 249's, there was another one from a diff seller tho and his says 97 and up On demand , and he has a seprete one for 96 and under full time 4x4.

Are there really 2 different kinds of VC's ? Hope i didnt get the wrong one. This is the one i got VIA newfire's recomendation but im wondering if this is for the Fulltime 249 and not the On demand one. Is there really a difference between the VC's ?

Every 249 is "full time" or AWD there is nothing on demand about AWD. You have no choice but to be in 4WD which sux. Thats why people upgrade to the 242.
