I may have found the answer to question without having to pull the transfer case from the '93. Not 100% sure, but I believe that this year 242 in a ZJ with 6 cyclinder will have the 1.550" input shaft and not the .840" like I think my '97 ZJ has.

From what year and model would I find 231 t/c will work in a 98 ZJ w/5.2 I believe it is a .840 23 spline.

Okay this is a great thread! Too great...

I have a friend that has a 98 Grand Cherokee Limited and it has been "funny" since he got it. He thought it must have a problem with the rear axle and/or front axle.

He managed to drive it with the little issues and noise. It has been sitting for some time now and he is wanting to fix the few issues and drive it. I told him today that it is likely the transfer case after he explained in more detail what it is doing.

After some internet research I determined that he should put in a 231. Great. What to get it out of? I found that here in this thread! Go me!

I start doing more research on how to find the right donor vehicle and see the 241 with 4 to 1 gear reduction...

My questions for the man that seems to know it all here...

CAN my friend use a 241 in his ride? Is it worth while over the 231 behind the 360? What all is required as far as drive shaft modification, linkage issues, etc. might we run into?

Any help would be great if you can!

The stock linkage should work.

Im pretty sure its been done. From what ive read the 241 from rubicons have an .840" input shaft, same as 96-98 ZJs

Linkage shouldnt be a problem, just make sure to use the tab on the donor tcase.

Driveshaft may or may not need cut and rebalancing

Only the 249 behind 93-95 V8's had the long 1.55" input. If the transmission is indeed different in the Jeep you were looking at, it would be the AW4. It would either have the .750 or .840" input, I'm not 100% positive on which one. If it is the shorter of the two, the . 090" shouldn't make much of a difference.

As for the 241OR, it will bolt up in place of existing cases with a .840" input, but that's about it. The OR utilizes a flanged 32 spline rear output, a 1330 front output yoke, and a different speed sensor than the typical gear driven ZJ sensor. Definitely not one of the most difficult swaps out there, but it's far from a direct replacement like a 231 or 242.

Quick question:
I have a '94 GC 5.2 with a 249 TC. I'd like to do a straight transfer as my VC seems to be dying on me.
Can I use a 249 transfer case from any model Jeep from '93 to '95?
I want to go sopping online to find a replacement and wanted to narrow down the selections.
Thanks

You will need a 93-95 with a V8 to be a direct swap. You can just replace the viscous coupler (VC) though without pulling the whole transfer case (TC)

Has anyone ever done just a VC replacement? I'd be curious about how hard it is to do in the vehicle.

I keep going back to when a guy mentioned that a 249 with a WORKING VC is really difficult to beat in terms of transfer case performance. Overall, I am satisfied with my 242 swap but I got lucky in finding a direct swap TC with an SYE kit already installed locally for an unbeatable price. If someone has done a VC replacement and felt it was definitely worth the money, I may have considered it.

Any writeups out there for a VC replacement?

Did my 242 swap a while back and just got around to changing my vic connectors today. Now it shows all modes correctly! I have a question regarding the linkage. The shop that did the swap used my original 249 linkage and as you know its a bit shorter, whn i shift the linkage it only shifts into 4 part time and nothing else then doesnt go back into 2wd. i an do it manually but seems that the linkage is not adjusted riteand to short. where can i get a full 242 linkage assembly.

So we are confident that this site is correct?

http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_cata...arts/jeep.html

If so then my 96ZJ can take a 242 from a 96-8ZJ or 97-01 XJ? Can someone verify this?

Cheers
Dave

Ok... I recently (This Past Friday), picked up my ZJ after having some (ok, a lot!) of work done. Included was a 242 swap since my VC was on it's way to full FUBAR. My VIC is not screaming at me because of the swap. If I read correctly, unless I missed something (which at my age is highly possible), all I have to do is tear apart my dash, unplug the red connector, plug in the black unplugged connector (not for the cig lighter), and the VIC will recognize my 242 gear selection???
Nice write up by the way!!! Sooner or later, I will start understanding this "Jeep Thing" better!
