What year is your rig? Is it a grand Cherokee? Which case did you put in? What case was in it before?

You cant use an 88 cherokee case in a 99., they arent even the same spline count. No idea how he got it to fit but im sure it's not pretty.

Yeah, it's a easy swap. Read from page one it's pretty much in this thread. In the snow and slush the 249 outperforms the 242, let us know the differences between the 249 and 231.

You also cant wire the 231 to make the VIC display the gear selections properly which is one of the reasons the 242 is the most common swap.

My rear DS is 1.5" too long, as expected.
Front shaft fit fine.
I used the mode switch and speedo gear housing from the 242.
Changed plug behind the VIC and now the proper mode is displayed.

Thanks for the how to. woohoo
Just to post info for future readers, I had 1.25" taken off my rear drive shaft and it fits perfect.

According to my '98 FSM, the VIC is indicating as designed with the NP231 swap I did into my wife's 5.9L: 2WD - "PART TIME" - N - "PART TIME" It doesn't light up the "LO", but the FSM says that it shouldn't.

231 only has part time, neutral, 4Lo. The ZJ from 96-98 only came pre wires to properly display the 249 and 242 because those were the only 2 cases used on 2nd gen ZJ's

I was also surprised to see that the '98 FSM has a chart that includes what the VIC should display when the '98 ZJ is equipped with an NP231. But it's right there on the page. And the VIC is displaying exactly what the '98 FSM says it should: 2WD has the two back tires lit, 4-high has all four tires lit and the words "PART TIME", neutral has no tires and no text, and 4-low has all four tires and "PART TIME" again. I'd like for the "LO" to light up, but the '98 FSM tells me that it shouldn't.

OK so it's not working the way it should, it's showing part time for LO, with the 242 you get 2wd, part time, full time, neutral, and LO all on the display. Either way though its just the display. if it doesnt bother you that it doesnt display perfectly, roll with it. It would bother me though lol

It did bother me . . . until I read the FSM which told me it's indicating correctly.

It's just not working that way you and I would like it to work. But it's displaying the way Chrysler says an NP231 in a '98 ZJ should display. That's good enough.

Plus, if I can't tell when it's in low-range, I've probably got bigger problems.

I understand the 242 has more display options, as well as more actual options. I'm down with a 242, but I like the bullet-proof reliability and commonality of the 231. Plus, I had the 231 sitting in a '95 ZJ. My wife and I also don't mind shifting in-and-out of 2WD-4HI when conditions dictate it.
