For the cross member? This is true, sometimes they seize into the nut inserts and end up breaking them out. If they look at all rusty it's a good idea to do a few cycles of heat and PB blaster, and preferably an impact to break them loose.

Yep, the cross member. ^^ Do this if they seem like they won't budge.

$99 ?? Oh man, yer killin me... I'm in So Cal.. Orange County to be specific.. I have not done a lot of looking yet, but a yard my Jeep mechanic recommended wanted $500 ! What's the secret to finding a yard for jeep parts ? Google ? I'm hoping you might have an inside line on junk/wrecking yards for ZJ t/c's ? My 249 needs to be replaced, and your post is just what the doctor ordered.. I just need to get my hands on the replacement 242 and not break the bank in the process...

Ebay is your Jeep junkyard. No yards are just Jeep. It would be nice though lol. Most yards also crush trucks as old as ours. Not worth anything to them. They would rather keep newer inventory.

Will a 231 out of a 94 zj 5 speed be a direct swap for my 94 zj auto with a 249?

Or will I have to swap the input shafts?

Depends on if you have a v8 or not
V8 yes I6 most likely not but the only way to check is to measure

Look at production dates on the case if you have a late 94 get a late 94 or newer. If you have early 94 get early 94 or older.

They changed the pitch of the teeth on the input some time around 94 when the company changed hands. the input will swap but the teeth will wear then the case will go boom.

ex. I have a 94 truck which was made in Dec 93. I got a case from a 94 zj that the case was built in 92

The case is my 94 zj has a serial# 3 12 93 2. So the build date is 3/12/93 right?

So therefore i would want a case that has a build date pre 94.5?

Sooooo, did anyone make any progress on going from a 3(4?) prong VIC sender plug from the TC to the 2 prong one on the 242's? I realise it's not *needed* but have a naggleing feeling it's not all done until I get the VIC working

This is a great thread. Thanks to all!!!

I have a few questions. I have a 98 5.9 and want to do a 242 swap. I also want to replace the front C/V drive shaft with a U-Joint shaft.

If I get the T-Case, rear shaft, and front shaft from a 96-98 4.0 select-trac as well as the yoke off the front axle, Will I be able to replace my C/V front shaft with the U-Joint shaft? Will everything fit? I haven't seen an answer to this while searching.

Thanks,
Mike D.

Not quite. Yes the t-case will work, the front shaft should work, but the rear wont. You re use your stock rear shaft. They used bigger u-joints in the rear shaft on the 5.9

I just did my 249 to 231 swap and it was a direct swap, no problems on the linkage. Did you use the tab off the 231? If you didn't you need to otherwise it will be to long. I even got the VIC to work with the 231, I was going to do a write up on it but nobody seemed interested so I didn't worry about it. Oh I also have a 96, what year was your 231 out of? Mine was out of a 96 xj so the year that you got your donor out of will make a difference.

If you got the 231 and the VIC (not the GDM) working, there would definitely be people interested. AFAIK, nobody else has ever managed it.
