Not used? The VC is in use every time the Jeep is driven

Well I'm still new to this whole thing so I'm not going to argue semantics with you. I apologize for calling the case crap. I retract my statement. You must really like your 249.

Dont retract anything just read. Above i agreed with you, they are crap in part but not as a whole. The 249 is a strong case and hold up very well other than the VC. The VC is crap they last 100K miles thats about it. I have read guys replacing them at a cost of about $300 and having them fail with in a year. Not worth the headache when a 242 can be had for $100-$150. I pulled my 249 out and put in a 242 a loooong time ago. What i was correcting you on is where you said the VC does bad when its not used. The VC is always used, every time the Jeep is moving. No way around that.

Where are you finding a good 242 for that price? I have yet to find one at a junk yard around me for less than $200 w/o a warranty.

If anything id think it would happen in small towns not NY which is one of the most expensive states in the US to live in. Not to mention im from Long Island which is east of NYC and everything out here costs a fortune. I duno man just search im sure you will find one. May take time but its worth it.

I found one a few months ago 60 miles away (Twin Cities Metro) for $150 w/ rear driveshaft, but that was before my VC started going out (only took 230k for mine). Now I'm not sure if he still has it and it doesn't matter yet, gotta save up some money first.

Your VC was shot long before 230K miles. No VC lasts that long lol. $150 is top dollar around here. Dont get me wrong guys do ask for more but they just never sell them.

I'm not 100% positive it is the original VC. My Jeep was a builder at some point in its life.

It had to have been replaced at some point. Also you may not need the rear driveshaft when you do the swap. I didnt when i did mine. I have a 242 for my other ZJ also. The one thats already dont is 98 ZJ 5.9 no lift at all. Stock rear driveshaft fit perfectly fine and has been that for quite some time now with no issues. Keeping in mind however that i NEVER wheel it. It's got about 1" before it bottoms out which is more than enough. My other ZJ is a 97 with 4.5" of lift. We'll see how that one works out with the stock shaft.

Ah and if i were you, id remove the front driveshaft if your VC is bad before you blow up one of the diffs, or both. A bad VC causes all kinda of stress on the axles and driveshafts which is not good at all.

I don't wheel either.

Think it would be fine to reinstall once it snows? And I should hopefully be getting a raise soon which will allow me to get a "new" 242.

I ran mine in 2wd in the snow it was about 3" and i have good tires and had no problems. To run with a bad VC in the snow wont hurt anything though. Just really bad on dry ground.
