Anyone know a good place to get a 242 in Central MN? Don't want the 231 since it would confuse my wife in the winter if she takes my Jeep somewhere but I don't want to replace the VC in my 249 when it finally goes. '97 Laredo w/ a 5.2L.

I have completed (mostly) my transfer case swap road tested the 242. speedometer works fine, as does 2wd Also, my zj no longer shudders to a stop when decelerating below 20 mph, and the noise the 249 was making is gone. Silence is golden.

Only problem I have had, I still need to work out is the console bezel. I can't seem to get it off to change the plugs behind the VIC =/ going to search more on that and try to figure out what's holding it in. I took all 4 screws out, and the top pulls free, but it's still connected somehow at the bottom below the cigarette lighter. Meh, a problem to tackle tomorrow. On the tired side now. Really pleased though, this was by far the most advanced thing I've ever done with a vehicle. I don't usually even change my own oil.

You have to pull the ash tray out and there will be two more screws to take out.

Hi guys,
Have been going through this for a while. Seems the 242 swap from 97-98 ZJs is a direct bolt in for the 5.9; inputs the same and lenght of various components making DS swaps unnecessary but what about the 5.2? Mine has a 4"lift with stock front and rear DS. Also, I have the HD front DS from the factory with U-joints (non-CV style). Is it a direct bolt in for the 5.2 as well? Of course I would take as many measurements as I could with respect to case lengths, etc. but want to throw that out there.

Thanks!
Mikey

I took about an inch off the slip yoke of my original DS from the 249. Other than that, it bolted right up.

Thanks guys,
Lil Joe, you just got the 97-98 242 and swapie swap, huh? You running any lift? The front and rear DSs looked ok, no over compression etc.? I assume all measurements were not exactly the same as the original 249 case but nothing to worry about it seems. Did you go from internal SY to external and the rear DS splines just slid right on?

EJ - you're referring to the rear DS, correct? Looking back would you still take an inch off? I have a 4" lift (like you) and am wondering if the DS is pulled back enough for me to not have to cut it.

Thanks again!

You should be fine, the only real issue is the rear DS length. With 4" of lift that will be negated. Let us know how it turns out.

On stock control arms, you might have to take off more than I did. On adjustabls or fixed aftermarket arms, the axle should move back a little. In this case (my case) you'll have a minimal amount to trim. And yes, I'm talking about cutting the yoke on the driveshaft.

After reading this whole thread, I think I got the easiest case to swap for my application.

My 249 has no build tag on it, but the ZJ has a 5.2L, was built 11/92, and the 249 has ISY.
The 231 I got from the JY for $20 has a build date of 5/10/94, ISY, and came off a 4.0L.

If I understand correctly, I will only need to swap input shafts(seals, etc. too) for this to work correctly.

PLEASE correct me if I'm misunderstanding something, I want to make sure my ducks are all in a row before getting elbows deep in this swap.

Thanks, Rob

Combining an 88 XJ 242 w/sye and a 98 249 front case half/input for my ZJ project. Anyone happen to know what size bit I need to drill the roll pin access hole into the 249's case half?

I don't have a 242 rubber plug on hand to measure..
