Transfer Case Swap

I know everyone recommends the NP242 as a "better" transfer case to replace the 249, but I've found a 231 for a decent price, and would like to throw it on and try it out. If it turns out I don't like it, I can always drop it out and ebay it. Right? Right.

Most conversion write-ups are based on 242 transfer cases... So i'm wondering... This 231 I've found is from a '93 YJ 4.0L HO, and the seller identifies it as 23 spline. Would this bolt up behind my AW4 in my '93 ZJ? I'm mostly worried about the speedo sensor... If I have to change the input shafts, then so be it.

Thoughts?

Cheers,
- trips

You're fine losing a 4wd full time option up in Canada...Eh?

Not that fine with it at all... But the cheapest 242 I've found in a parts yard out here cost 500 bucks. For that kind of cash, I might as well suck it up and replace the VC.

I did just learn that the 231s off of YJs used different front output yokes, and I'd have to swap in a double Cardin joint. Anyone know of any online vendors for these? Or how hard this swap would be?

Cheers,

The big difference about replacing or repairing.....even with the same money...you'll end up repairing again. The replacement is permanent.

I also have a problem with the front output yoke. My donor is a 93 XJ 231 for my 94ZJ 249.
Any suggestion on what to replace? Is there a yoke for a double cardan with 26 spline count?
