transfer case problem????

Hey guys i just bought me a 94 gc 4.0 selec trac auto. Well my tranny went out and got one out of a 95. Bolted up no problemo. Now my problem. I destroyed my transfer case. How you may ask?. I dont know..... Slid my tc on and went on half way. I figured the rear seal on tranny was tight and holding me up. So i put the bolts on and started tightwning them evenly. Well the tc went the whole way on......until i put the rear drive shaft in. The whole rear housing is shattered. What did i do wrong. I know there are 3 different transfer cases. Could the input shaft spline lenghts be different or what is going on. And could i have screwed up the transmission at the same time. Any help is awesome. Thanks
