Transfer case leak...how much $$$$ ?

Noticing a leak from my transfer case. It's something I'm that is well beyond my mechanical ability, so looking for estimates on how much money I'm looking at to have the gasket replaced.

So is it leaking from the input and/or output seals or is it leaking from the case halves?

Mine was leaking from the rear output seal, tranny pan and the case halves. I fixed them all at once, and I'm not much of a mechanic really. It took some time, but wasn't difficult. Woody's got a great write-up on here if you're at all interested in doing it yourself. If you've got an extra set of hands to help, it's not too bad at all. The hardest part was monkeying the transfer case back up to bolt it back into place.

I'm glad this came up. Mine is seeping from what I think is the shift linkage but that really doesn't make sense because the fluid level is lower than that if you know what I mean. I'm guessing it could be seals and or gasket as well.

Could you post the link to the write up, I may tackle this in the near future.

Theres no gasket between the transfer case and tranmission. You can usually tell if one of the seals between them is leaking by the little notch between the transmission and transfer case.

Theres an press in seal at the output shaft of the transmission and another press in seal on the transfer case input shaft.

Depending on your rear shaft theres a press in seal on the extension housing too.

I'd like to see this writeup too.

it appears to be the case valves but haven't done a thorough check

just dont go to aamco, when i told them it was leaking at the ds seals when i was just getting a free quote, they tried to tell me it was also leaking at the 'half' seal, for a total of over $600. needless to say i responded very uncivil, like the apple store would say, and walked right out of there two places down to my normal shop and only got charged $160 for the ds seals

yea, about apple, dont buy an ipod, buy a zune, cuz one little blemish on the ipod voids the warranty
