Transfer Case Grinding?

I went on a hunting trip lately where i had to use 4WD a lot.. while i was out there i started to hear a god awful grinding noise coming from somewhere ONLY when it was in 4WD. now it is real bad to the point where i can feel the grinding coming from somewhere when i slip it into 4WD. It doesnt make any noise when im in 2WD at all and it works fine other than that. I would like any opinions on what you guys think it is. Thanks!

See if an adjustment in the shifter cable will help.

If anything first thing I would check is the fluid level in the tcase. If low, I would drain and see what comes out. Look for any metal debris, discoloration and smell.

Forgot to add.. I changed the fluid in it before i left on the trip. Didnt find anything unusual then...although it was working great before i changed it. i put about 1200 miles on it since the change.

i would start by unbolting the linkage and shifting it manually at the t-case. most likley its a linkage issue.

The thing is though (that i should have added sorry) is that is still goes into 4WD.. i didnt think it was locking in at first but when i put it into 4WD the front tires will spin in mud...could it just be slipping in and out? for some reason i think the chain is slipping inside of the T case.
