Transand tranfer case replacement 96 zj

My freind blew the trans on his zj, he wants to sell it for super cheap, next to nothing, it has a 5.2 and headers on it, 180 k miles, how hard is a trans replacement on these, while I'm at it I would like to swap it from quadra drive to selec trac, is that a straight forward swap too, or is it pretty complex, I am pretty mechanically inclined and have swapped the trans on a cobalt and it was a pain in the ***, would this be easier since it's a conventional trans, does the motor have to come out to swap it?
Thanks

The 242 swap is very simple. There is a great thread on here that you can follow that walks you through the whole process. I'll try to find the link. I'm not sure about the tranny though.

Here is the write up I followed. It's very in depth.

Swapped my Trans without taking the motor out. Pull the zj up on 4 ramps, took out both driveshafts, put a jack under the Trans got the weight off crossmember, took out crossmember, removed the bolts holding bell housing and torque converter, let the Trans down with the jack. I would recommend taking transfer case off first though it adds alot of weight to the Trans and I wouldn't try and do it by myself. It took 3 of us to take mine out, but we're just backyard mechanics

Ok thanks, I was looking at the procedure and it looks pretty straight forward, he wants 100 bucks for the jeep so i think I'll do it, what do used transmissions usually go for on these, this is just going to be my backup car and my off-road toy since I already daily a wj
