Trans or front end skips when accelarating or turning?? New to Jeeps

Ok i got a 98 ZJ Full Time 4wd. When i either goose it or turn and accel it makes a grinding noise and it makes the trans skip. But at other times it is just fine. it only does it under 25mph. I am new to the whole jeep thing and just seeing if anyone has had any problems like this with there ZJs? Thanks

possibly sounds like a failed viscous coupler.

viscous couplers=about 400 for a part that has already failed on you once. just bought a t-case out of a 99 cherokee today for 100 bucks. i have the same year grand with the same transfer case. if you go the route of a new transfer case, i would look for either an np231 or 242. im assuming you have a 5.2l v8, with a 44re transmission(i know the tranny code may sound like jibberish to you) if you do have the 44re, you will need a 23 spline input shaft, not a 21 spline. it was discussed in a previous thread as well. from what i have gathered here and elsewhere on the internet, they made the switch from he 21 to the 23 spline in 95. so as long as you find a 23 spline 231 or 242, you should be fine. someone please correct me if i am wrong on this. oh, there is also a write up on how to do the case swap in the FAQ section of the zj/wj tech forum. may want to check that out if you have not done so already. hope this helps

The 21 spline tcase was only found on early cherokee and wrangler(yj) 4cyl models it was phased out in 91 I think.

You're thinking of the planetary gear pitch change in 95.
