tranny or torque converter

I have a 98 GC with the 4.0l and select trac (I think that's the one---awd, 4wd hi, 4wd low). Lately I've noticed that I'm having some problems when I'm cruising at a constant speed. This happens when I'm driving with and without cruise control.

Anyway, when I'm cruising at highway speeds, I notice that sometime the car hesitates like it's going to downshift and the rpms go up very slightly, again, like it's about to downshift, then the rpms go back down and nothing else happens.

Anyone know if this is a tranny or torque converter problem?

It sounds transmission related to me. Torque Converters are practically indestructible anyway. Have you checked your trans fluid recently using the method outlined in the owners manual? Have you replaced the fluid and filter in your transmission. These are the two easiest and cheapest things to try first.

SelectTrac by the way has full-time, part-time, 2WD, and part-time low modes. If your 4WD system is 4WD all the time with no 2WD mode available, then you have QuadraTrac.

Will the cruise work thru this complaint? Or does it quit working when this happens. you may have a bad brake pedal switch or a bad torque converter lock uo solienoid or a bad converter.

Yeah, it keeps on cruising. The cruise control doesn't turn off or anything. Also, like I said, it happens when i'm driving w/o the cruise contral as well.
