Trac-Lok vs. Vari-Lok

I saw they stopped making trac-Loc after the 01 models.

Why did they switch and whats the difference between these two axels?

Vari-lok is better than Trac-lock. Track-Lock was an old style limited slip, while Vari-lok was a newer, higher end progressive limited slip using fluid to build pressure in a clutch pack, instead of preloaded clutches. They simply phased out Trac-lock in 02 so that they wouldn't have 2 types of limited slip rear diffs (they used Vari-lok front and rear in Quadra-drive starting in 99).

So how accurate is this LSD demo video with Jeeps Vari-Lok?

Would the same thing happen with Vari-Lock as in this Video?

its not accurate at all. when the tires started to spin on the roller, it would pump the oil and put pressure on the clutch pack in the diff. the other axle would get power and go foward with no issues. it will be even more effective if both front and rear axles are varilock.

calling them limited slip is somewhat misleading. they work in a progressive manner and are superior to a true LSD.

Vari-loks are still technically limited slip, as they are not true lockers, they simply "limit slip". However, they do work differently than a conventional LSD (and yeah, they work well, especially if you can get away with little to no FM without chattering or grabbing).

when the pump pumps I believe the side gear is locked to the carrier which makes it a locker but only momentarily until both axles turn at the same speed and then the pumping stops and it returns to an open diff

they do hold the presure some what which keeps both tires spinning. i find that my rear axle holds much better then my front.
