Towing Package or Towing Prep Package?

My GCL came with a Towing Prep Package according to the window sticker and i do indeed have a hitch and the factory trailer hitch wiring. What i want to know is what is the difference between the Prep package and the Towing Package or are they one and the same? Thanks.

Does it have a tranny cooler? The towing package useually means hitch and tranny cooler.

It means that that hitch is only held on by 2 sheetmetal screws so DO NOT USE IT.

In all honesty i think you have the towing package - its just different verbage on the window sticker. The only other thing I think it could be is that its a smaller receiver or is not designed to carry as much weight (all though I doubt this). If everything you need to carry a trailer is there then you should be good to go. Towing prep package may also indicate better drivetrain components than standard to handle towing also.

Towing prep would mean, tranny cooler/gearing but no hitch.

Towing package means, tranny cooler/gearing/hitch.

My 98 ZJ has the towing prep package. When asked the mechanic many years ago, he said it is just the gearing and components to handle towing. No tranny cooler installed.

If I had to tow something, I need to buy a hitch and wiring. If necessary, I also need to add the tranny cooler.

The towing prep package from the dealer meant you have a cooler, and 3.73's.

If you don't have a tranny cooler, you don't have the towing prep package, which could mean you don't have 3.73's if you have the 4.0L engine.

Hmm... my window sticker, which I still have, says it has towing prep group and it shows it has the gearing. Where will the cooler be? Behind the radiator, right?

Cooler is in front of the rad, passenger side. It's actually an auxiliary cooler. The radiator does the primary cooling.

We've discussed this one in the past. Towing prep means the cooler is there, gears are there. Towing package means cooler, gears, wiring, receiver.

I am sending out for my build sheet @ jeep.com . My 1996 GCL has Tranny Cooler and no hitch . I put the hitch and wire harness on myself but not sure about steering and gearing.

I'd pretty much guarantee you have steering. As to your gearing, you should be able to find a metal tag on your rear differential that will give you the gearing in it

Once you get your build sheet, you'll find the gearing on there next to where it says what axles you have

Wondering about my trailer lights..... I installed a mopar hitch that I got that has a 7 pin built in, but The wires inside the rear quarter panel aren't where I expected, so much for plug and play....however, that's been addressed in another thread, gotta look in the *other* side....
But, in the meantime I have a flat 4 pin plug with a converter hooked up to my taillights. Trailer lights work great on the Dodge minivan with the same setup, but with the jeep, if the taillights are on, the turnsignals at he trailer are really weak. Vehicle lights working fine. Wondering if it's a TS relay thing. Pretty sure I have the wiring correct, and spliced and soldered all connections. Moot problem if I find the factory connector buried in the left rear fenderwell....but I like having that 4 pin, just wished it worked better. Testing with a test light shows that I've got power when and where I'm supposed to. And trailer works fine on Minivan.
