tow hitch restoration

Anyone know if taking a rusty tow hitch off and sanding it down and repainting will compromise the structural integrity

Depends how bad the rust is...

Mostly surface but old paint is falling off bc of it

You'll be fine. Just take an electric or air powered wire brush to it, pull all the surface rust off and hit it with 4 coats of rustoleum.

Or wait for the recall?

I can't say for you all but I would feel like a huge A-hole going to get a free tow hitch because the one I have has a little surface rust on it.

Just clean up the one you have unless it doesn't work for some reason.

Works just fine pulled myself out couple times with it I was just under it and saw It as something else I could do before it does have problems. And I thought they weren't covering anything over like 10 years or something for free. I was told u gotta pay for it

The jury is still out on that but it looks like they are going to install some hitches on ZJ's. We will supposedly receive letters in the mail. I assume only the ZJ owners who don't have a tow hitch in their build sheet will get letters but who knows.

Either way going to the dealer is a huge PITA in my opinion. I would rather go to a JY and pull some useful parts and spend the day installing them than waiting around at a dealership. Tow hitches at the yard are only like 30 bucks.

I was hoping they would hand out some skid plates. Even then I would just go and pick it up and put it on myself.

Mine is unique to the factory tire carrier, they can inspect it but I seriously doubt I'm actually going to hassle with it, I'll sign off the recall.

Yeah, especially if I had a functional one already. An hour with a wire wheel on a grinder will clean it right up. Here's a few pictures of how mine cleaned up.

You can see how it was to begin with, structurally intact but surface rust

In process, before it got painted

Do you know what size the bolts are for the hitch? I am going to install one but I need to re-tap the threaded hole and cant find what size the hole is. I believe it is a 14 mm but not sure
