I think no one knows what you mean by carrier, carrier bearings preload maybe, bearing caps, ring gear bolts? not sure what they're calling the carrier, and I do beleive we have a crush sleeve for pinion depth.

Ya i was just wondering if all zj's came with them? I mean for the torque spec on the carrier bearings for the 2 bolts on each side. Its wierd that the chilton does not have it.

The crush sleeve has no bearing on pinion depth. It is used to control pinion bearing preload.

To the OP, I think that they are torqued to 55 ft-lbs but I really can't remember.

Thats cool, I have yet to set up a dana, I'm speaking from experience on Ford 3rd members where the crush sleeve does set pinion depth and at the same time preloads the bearing, I myself like to use a solid spacer on my Fords. How do you set pinion depth on a Dana? Oh forget it I see now, shims are added to the pinion support at the nose of the pinion and not the crush sleeve.

No, that would be horrible to do. You would be crushing the crush sleeve, and then backing it off making it loose in there and removing any preload you had on the pinion bearings.

Pinion depth is set with pinion shims.

I was told crush sleeve is to set pinion spacing and bearing preload..... I called the dealership and they said that the zj came with either a crush sleeve or a shim kit installed. Both the axles i took apart have crush sleeves and i asked them what the price was for the shim and they said 88 bucks compared to 5-18 bucks :O i was like ahhh i will stick with the sleeve But is that not right on the sleeve i am so confused i know when you take one out you really do not want to put it back in. what would you suggest? the site that i found say just to torque it between 160-500 fp what do you think about 350 or somthing?

500ft-lbs for the pinion nut? That is WAY too high. You don't tighten it to a specific torque, to tighten it until the pinion itself rotates to a certain torque, I think 14-19ft-lbs (not positive on that number) - and you measure that w/o the carrier installed (err pretty sure on that, has been a while since I did my gears).

Check out the gear installs on this forum (is my club) to verify against:

If you were to constantly change it to figure out how much you're applying, but a torque dial would really be best. not expensive. In fact the only two tools he has that are expensive is the bearing puller ($300ish) and the case spreader. I think he got the dial indicator and torque dial thing for like $60. Don't try and set up gears w/o the proper tools or you'll just ruin them.
