Timing is controled by the crank position sensor and computer. If you're trying to stap the dist for the first time and you didn't mark it before the tear down (maybe different block?) set engine TDC #1 and place rotor to about the 8 O'clock position just to start it. You need to use a scan tool to properly set the dist(injector timing).

Rotating the distributor will do nothing for the ignition timing. It will only change the timing of the injector firing.

Ignition timing is completely controlled by the pcm and is triggered by the flexplate and crankshaft position sensor along with taking in readings from the map, tps, ait, etc... But you can not alter timing by rotating the distributor.

To set the injectors correctly you need a DRB-III so you can monitor pulse width timing and correctly set it by rotating the distributor.

thanks five.nein.... that is helpful.... the only issue is, the entire motor, tranny, accessories.... EVERYTHING is in and bolted up, so as you might imagine... its kinda difficult to determine the status of everything,
EX. what cylnder is TDC on wich stroke... location of contact in dest.

later when my friend gets off work, we get back to it, untill then, nothing can be done... only talked about.

As long as the cam and crank are set right, the worst thing that can happen is you might need to pull out the distributor gear and reset it. Long needlenose pliers or a strong magnet should do it. The writeup explains how to find TDC cyl 1 on compression. Follow that writeup to the letter. I got 2 perfect running 5.9s using it.
