Steering stabilizer....

How does the steering stabilizer fit into this equation?

the steering stablizer goes from the axle tube to the tie rod and acts to dampen the side to side movement of the axle when you hit potholes and bumps on the road.

does that help??

unfortunantly the front diagram doesnt show the steering linkages or stabilizer at all.

just a little clarification, it doesnt dampen the side to side axle movement, but rather the steering linkage movement. the axles side play is kept in line via the track bar (6). potholes and such really jerk the system around, especially if you hit them with one wheel or in a rough manner. the stabilizer reduces much of the feeback that would normally be sent up to the steering wheel.

heres a picture of the basic setup. the stabilizer is hard to see, but its kind of hidden behind the green link.

So let me see if I understand the steering equation here.

The drag arm is connected to the steering column and turns the passenger side wheel. Since the tie rod connect that wheel to the driver side wheel...the driver side wheel turns too.

The track bar is connected to the frame on one side it seems. The other side to the passenger side. I am guessing this keeps the axl from moving size to side.

The stabilizer seems to be connected between the front axel and the tie rod on my Wj. I am still not sure why it is connected to these two points though. I am guessing this is damping the wheels turning movement a bit so it allows them to be smoother and not as jerky on the road.

Hopefully I am partially correct this far....

So why is an aftermarket steering stabilizer better than stock for onroad travel?

Thanks,
Chris

You got it.

The stabilizer is connected in these locations to dampen the movement of the tires left to right. It helps reduce the harshness in your steering as the tires hit bumps. Try disconnecting it one day and drive around cautiously. It will be noticeably worse.

The stock stabilizer is usually perfect if your vehicle has stock tires and no suspension lift. As soon as the mass/weight/size of the tires is increased, and if the suspension geometry changed, it requires more dampening to get the same effect. So aftermarket setups generally resist vibration more with heavier duty valving, and different internal oils. (Some even come with dual stabilizer setups.)

You will want an aftermarket one.

Many people will recommend Old Man Emu, Tenneco, and Rancho.

A search will show that there are countless options.
