is there any buyer protection when buying a used trans privately

Theres a 42RE out of a 93 Cherokee with 177k locally which he's asking 350 for. He said there was a no show that wanted it so the transmission is now out of the jeep which scares me. I'm not trying to get stiffed with a junk transmission. Is there anything that protects a buyer in transactions like this?

What do you all think?

It probably depends on your state or local laws. But you might be able to ask for a written guarantee or warranty, and be sure to get a receipt.
Or have it checked by a transmission shop.

Can they check it without being in the jeep?

Without being 100 percent certain, I'm sure they could, after all, they don't rebuild transmissions while they're still installed! Could call your local shop and ask?

If you want protection then buy or rebuild from a business that provides a warranty. If you buy junk then expect junk.

If you can't afford to lose $350 I wouldn't do it. There's absolutely no telling what you're going to get.

thats exactly what you're buying though........ a junk 20 year old tranny with 177k...........

there is no protection for you and good luck trying to get it.

i sell a lot of stuff on craigslist/kijiji adn there is 0 protection for you, and i will always be the first to tell a seller that if thats an issue, buy new.

cheap junk is always a gamble. don't expect it to be anything else, then expect someone else to pay for your short cuts.

best of luck in your transmission search!

You're better off with a junkyard transmission. At least they'll usually give you 30 days warranty and the price should be roughly the same. I did buy a transmission off of a guy on a local board once that was already out of the vehicle but he had a decent reputation and provided me with receipts for the recent rebuild.

Yep, its a gamble. Maybe its good, maybe not. But just like in a casino, if you lose, you lose. So what you gotta ask yourself is, do you feel lucky?
