Tbi

.. What did it take to put a Cheby TBI ONTO THE 6cyl that had carbs on them.
I used to know an old man in CedarHill Tx that put TBI's on lots of jeeps WJ mostly. They called him Mr Jeep. But he's since moved to Colorado doing maintenance at a tourism mountain trail ride location.
.. He'd told me several times it didn't take any thing to add one.
.. I've got an old 80 Big Bronco 300cid that I've always felt this would be it's cure all.
...

Wouldnt TBI be a downgrade? I would think that Bronco has TBI already. My 84 300/4.9 6cyl did from what I remember. Fuel injected at the TB.

No mine is 1980 it's a carb .. and that carb is always screwed up. Through out the years I bet I've have 20 different carbs on it.
... Back in the day when I used to own a parts store I just replaced them defective. 1st sign of trouble I replaced it. I also put several other model carbs on it just playing with it.

dnuccio 07-21-2013 03:33 PM

Why is this in the ZJ forum?

dusterdude 07-21-2013 03:51 PM

And i cant imagine anyone having issues with that many carbs, something doesnt smell right

papitt 07-21-2013 04:06 PM

It's in the jeep forum because in the early 80 it was a popular swap .. I thought someone here might have knowledge about an old swap that was done before our nice new EFI MODELS.
...........
.. Yes your correct but remember I owned the parts store for 30+ years . Not all those carbs were new if you'll read between the line .I even adapter an old Rambler carb on it once for fun looking for mileage but & just playing to see what could be done. Different jets into and old 223 ford carb .. That one really ran good but you talk about no power.
.. But that model carb did cause lot of issues even our Ford Dealership cussed them.
...
.... But I was looking for some one with knowledge about that TBI swap.

Hmmmm,he's 63, I'm 56, and you are 16, ease up man, we deserve to ramble sometimes.

papitt 07-21-2013 05:48 PM

COOL I Love it .. Funny when I checked in here this time the 1st quest is my WJ ... I Think why not ask it in the WJ Section ..

... But like me I only come to the ZJ SECTION because I don't own the others. 7 Knowledge is just that Knowledge.
Thanks

This doesn't make any sense. WJ's are all multi port fuel injection. I can't imagine any reason to swap to TBI.

Honestly I would post this in the CJ tech section since all of those were carb'd to begin with and I'm sure some one would know how to do a TBI swap.

96zedjay 07-21-2013 10:30 PM

I would go with a 87' + up EEC-IV Ford setup, GM TBI is crap.

papitt 07-21-2013 10:43 PM

.. OK I GUESS YOUR CORRECT .. I Do believe the CJ might be the best location .. If I ever ventured over there. But I only check in with the ZJ GUYS.
.. Thanks again.

The GM TBI is simple, robust, has low fuel pressure, and uses cheap off the shelf dead nuts reliable GM sensors. The GM ECU is pretty much thoroughly hacked and there is a huge on-line knowledge base to support it. If you have a factory two barrel carb and an odd ball motor with no aftermarket or factory fuel injected intakes to swap over the TBI is a very good choice. Plus they came in different sizes for different motors.

I had an 89 Camaro 305 TBI and it would get 35 mpg on the highway.

Ford's CFI system is junk. The Ford multi-point stuff is also good and well understood as you mentioned but the aftermarket support is more about the 5.0 equipment. Since he has a six cylinder he'd have to use the 3.8 engine management. I'm not sure there's a lot of support for that. Is the 3.8 even fire? If it's odd fire I doubt you could make it work on a straight six.

If it were me I'd go with Megasquirt or the GM EFI for the even fire Buick turbo 3.8. Turbo ready ;)
