According to the owners manual for my 97 ZJ, I cna put in ATF or Dexron III Mercon. Is this wrong? Its got the dexron in it now and seems ok (driven ~100 miles). This is a 242 transfer case btw.
You can buy the fluid at most any autoparts store.
Sorry for the slight thread hijack =]
TIA

Heck when I did my 249>242 TC swap - George at Transfer Cases Unlimited put in AMS 5W30 oil. And he knows more about TCs than just about anyone!
But I'm not sure I'd do that with a 249.

No kidding... the 249 is a lot more picky than the 242... Hell my 247 has its own fluid...

It's not wrong, but here's what I do: my XJ with AX15 tranny uses Dexron in the tranny, so I use Dexron in the TC, my ZJ with the 42RE uses ATF+ so I use ATF+ in the TC as well. By using the same fluid in the TC as the transmission uses, I manage to minimize my confusion factor and keep the right fluids on hand.

Warren, I thought the 42RE was the tranny that was behind the I6's... for a 96' 5.2 shouldn't it be a 44RE?

I also use 5w50 i my np242 - was told it will keep everything including the slip yoke happier - works great! 5.2 V-8s can have a 44RE or 46RH (A-500) and 5.9s have a 46RE (A-518)

Tim, good catch, it is the 44RE on the 5.2, but the 4.0 XJ (95 Cherokee) does us the AX15.
People my age have no business trying to work from memory, but I'm just too tired to look it up.....
