You don't have the wrong tranny.
AW4 was only used for the first couple months of production. Most 93s had 42re.

It's not just a matter of cooler lines and a couple sensors. The switch would require a LOT of wiring changes, and a different TCM (trans control module). You'd have to get a bunch of wiring out of an AW4 equipped ZJ, and plan on tearing apart most of the dash to do the job.
The TCM and wiring will cost more than the AW4 did, plus labor...

ya you're right I forgot about the tranny computer. My 42re is messed up bad but I think I might have more problems that just the actual tranny. My o/d off switch used to work but now it doesn't. and in order to shift from drive to 2 while moving i have to apply the brake. so i think i might have some other problems going on too.

Do you have an XJ cherokee like your deal says, or do you have a ZJ Grand Cherokee?

its a zj sorry just changed it i didn't see the zj option on there the first time.

To sum my problems up:
-I know my current 42re is messed up because there are metal shavings in the trans pan. However, I am wondering if it is only the transmission that is messed up because of some random problems.

1. the o/d off switch no longer works. It did before the trans problems started.

2. the trans will not downshift at all and will not go into overdrive. will only go into 1 if i shift hard from neutral.
