Most junk yards label the windshields with what's wrong.

For just swapping axles I don't think you'll need any special tools, good breaker bar,hvy jackstands, good floor jack. Step by step in the fsm available online, on ebay, and other methods. Replacing the gear set or bearings is a bit more complicated, and alittle tedious. I had never touched one till the rebuild in my post. Its not impossible though and if you do your homework it'll be ok. I stayed with the d35 cause I putt from one location to another and it lasted all these years anyways.

The best way to remove old leaf spring U bolts is to cut through them with a hacksaw. Takes half the time of removing all 8 bolts. Just be sure you have a new blade and a spare just in case.

the main purpose of swapping to a 44a is the larger shafts. no, the 35 shafts wont work in the 44a.

Since I just use it for a daily driver, no off roading, should I just stick with the d35? Or is there another benefit to the 44? I need the simplest and easiest.

simplest and easiest: swap a d35 in. you don't need a 44.
