Stupid question about lifts

Ok, this is a stupid question, but I am new to the 4x4 world, and I need to learn.

When I see a 2, 4 or 6 inch lift, I am not understanding what they are measuring. Is it the size of the coil springs, or wheel base, or what?

Does anybody know of any websites, which would help out newbie’s? This forum has been very helpful. Thank you

Welcome the world of Jeeps.

Okay, the number of the lift 2, 4 or 6 (whatever) is the height of which the new suspension should put your vehicle over the stock height.

So, a 2 inch BB (budget boost or coil spring spacer) would put you two inches higher than stock.

The other heights that you'll see 3, 3.5, 4.25 or 4.5 and higher will give you at least that height over stock. Some kits start out higher and then settle down to the advertised height. Some start out at advertised and then settle to a little lower.

If you start adding a heavier front bumper, a winch, a heavier back bumper then, you'll notice spring settling or sag sooner.

Check out www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums and read through the posts and archives. Check the member's rides thread to see what you like and don't.

Check out www.nagca.com and read through that also. Check out the grand photos also to see what mods you like and don't.

A little more specific -
The stock height is typically measured from the center of a wheel to the lip of the fender. A stock WJ is at about 18". When you insert taller springs or a spacer, that distance will be increased. So a 4" lifted WJ should measure about 22" from the center of the wheel to the fender lip.

The objective is to increase the amount of space between the axles (where the wheels are attach) and the rest of the frame/body. The lift raises the center of gravity and ground clearance of the body components. It also allows you to install larger tires (since there's more room in the wheel well) so you gain some more ground clearance at the differentials.

Just to complicate things, on some vehicles (Wranglers, etc) you can do a body lift. Because of the "body on frame" construction, spacers can be inserted to raise the whole body. This is not possible on a ZJ/WJ because of unibody construction method.

Hope this helps.
