strange day with warm weather and starts

so it i have the what is seemingly normal long crank to start the 4.0, i decided it must be the pump(it makes a whining noise on the interstate the same pitch as when it is priming), but from what i have read it may be spark plugs or distributor cap.

this reason because after i prime the pump a few time it still struggles to start, but on top of that the pump was replaced sometime because of a leak at the seal.

but what happened was it would start, then after 5 seconds it would drop down almost off and kick back up to what i have seen as the normal rpm ranch for the jeep, but the battery meter went from just above 14 to just below(didnt run any tests as the wife hate that i spend more time working on the jeep then with here). i have new spark plugs to go in and a cap, any other suggestions?

cliffs
-rough start no matter what
-odd idle for a few minutes then runs fine
-new battery
-fuel pump leaks on top from a po not putting the pump in right
-new cap, wires, and spark plugs
-new fuel pump relay
-filled up today

not sure what else would be relevant but ill keep posting till i find the problem unlike many posts in the search i found

Best suggestion I can give is to not just throw money at it, use some test equipment to try and diagnose the problem.

A fuel system pressure tester is available from most chain auto parts store on the "loaner tool" program, or you can buy one from Harbor Freight for less than $30.

Same for the battery, try to get a battery/charging system tester and see what the system is really doing.

Can't advise you on the problem of the wife not wanting you to work on the Jeep, but I can tell you haven't been married for 33 years. After that long they WANT you to get out of the house

update i replaced the spark plugs, helped a bit with the low idle

however while i was tinkering with it i unplugged the temp sensor by the power steering pump and it forgot about, drove around just fine. plugged it in and it started acting up again... wtf does a temp sensor have an affect on starts?

Ok Ill Look Into It, Would A Bad Temp Sensor Still Give A Good Reading If It Was Bad Though? It Goes Up To 210 And Stays

Also I Was Looking At Fuel Pumps And Of Course I Checked Ebay, There Is One Listed At A Brand Named Replacement Has Anyone Tried Them? I Search And They Are Carried By Other Site, But Ebay Has Them For 73 bucks

It's best to do some testing as was already mentioned. Below is a test for your temp sensor resistance w/a digital ohm meter. If you don't have one you best buy one because it will come in real handy for keeping your ZJ running. This test is for a 96 but the resistance should be the same as your 98 4.0.

Also test your fuel pressure at the rail and you can borrow a loaner fuel gauge pressure test set from Advance and/or Autozone. It even comes with directions and we can lead you through how to test it.

I wouldn't buy any $73 fuel pump and here's a real good deal on a Bosch for $120 for your 98 4.0 and it should come with a new tank seal.

While spending some quality time with your wife I'd be watching every auto auction, car race, anything to do with vehicles, TV shows you can until she yells, "why don't you go work on your Jeep!!". LOL, and I've been married a long time too!

Good luck!

so the colder the temperature the higher the ohms i want for the temp sensor?

and i have found multiple other sites that carry the Replacement branded pump for the average price around 130
also found this its made be Prozone?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Electric...022#vi-content
this is made by Direct Replacement(i believe 1a auto carries this one for 105)

and there is this one made by Airtex (autozone carries this brand in store) im leaning toward this one

Yeah, just follow the chart and the colder the temp the more resistance/the higher the ohms.

Do what you want on the fuel pump but just keep in mind seldom does cheaper/less expensive mean better.

Not a good/safe situation at all when gas is leaking out of the tank from a bad pump seal and the exhaust is almost right next to it. Plus if gas can leak out then water can leak in.

The gas tank is not a sealed system and there's a vacuum emission line leading from the top of the tank up to the charcoal canister near the engine bay. Then the canister is connected to your intake vacuum. So in theory if you have a bad seal it could be like a long-line vacuum leak but probably wouldn't affect the engine running that much.
