Steering wheel shaking like mad

i have a '93 jeep grand cherokee with the 4.0 inline 6 engine. my problem is that when i accelerate to around 45-50mph the steering wheel begins to violiently shake back and forth, and i hear a loud thumping sound in the front of my car. this only happens around this speed, if i accelerate past 45 quickly this problem doesnt happen, but if i build up to it slowly it begins to shake. i know its not the break rotors because when i apply the breaks the shaking stops. please help! thanks

Check to make sure the wheels are still in balance. Sounds like you may have lost the balance weight off of one of the tires.
