Steering Box Rebuild

Where is a good place to get a seal kit for a ZJ steering box?

Is replacing the seals a big job?

Any idea how much a seal kit is?

My steering box is leaking at the pitman arm. This is the second box I've had on my ZJ and both ended up leaking at the same seal. I've got one off (the first one) so I thought I'd replace the seals for something to do.

Replacing the pitman seal is no biggy. You just have to get the pitman arm off, pry out the old seal and smack in the new one. The trick to keeping it from blowing it again is to lay off the steering stops. When you hold your wheel to lock you're making the pump produce pressure because you have pressure on the wheel. If the gears in the box aren't moving then the fluid isn't flowing over pressurizing the box and the first place that lets go is the pitman seal. Soon after you wil notice the input shaft seal dripping.

You should be able to get it at the same place you can find the pitman seal. Most parts stores can get them. Usually hard to find parts can be found at CarQuest or Napa.

Carquest and Napa > Auto Zone for weird parts.
