So I had Pete's Welding take my Tom Woods Drive Shaft and...

Harry, who's probably been doing drive shafts since he's 10 years old said it had vibration and that he spent a lot of time, more than most any DS, balancing it...going through multiple steps and felt it was much improved...and I took today and tomorrow off and went to Trenton to pick it up this morning (Sorry Steve!) and I was skeptical and told Harry i wasn't sure when I was going to get around to putting it in but Harry wanted me to call him and give him a report on any change it made...So, this afternoon I got off the couch and put it in and took it for a test drive.....at 40 no vibe, 50 no vibe....60 no vibe...wow...65 harmonics but no vibe....70 a little vibe in the gas pedal but no floor or seat cushion vibe....75. still pretty good..I think it can be driven at highway speed!!
So Tom Woods....you need to be more precise in your balancing of your double cardan CV front drive shafts!!
And Harry at Pete's Welding Trenton NJ - You Are The Man!!!

Phil

Well, I got the TW DS through OK4WD and Steve the service manager said that he was concerned whether TW could accurately balance a DS that weighed that much with so short a length. It weighs 35 lbs, probably twice what my rear and longer DS weighs. But Harry does a lot of truck work and his experience pays off!
Thanks for your interest!

Phil

Rick - Harry showed me pics of the hot rod he built. He's looking for something to make into a rat rod now. He wants a Rambler convertible.

Tim - Thanks! Yeah it's great to rejoin the 4WD world!

I talked to OK today and they're gonna talk to Tom Woods about this situation. There is no guarantee from TW that a DS is perfectly balanced but I don't think I should have to pay someone else say $50 - $100 to get it right! It also makes OK look bad!
So, I'm moving on. I need to get out there and change the oil and TC fluid.

Phil

I'm sad to hear that Phil will no longer be able to feel the vibes. They could come in handy after a long day at work.
