The best shocks for the ZJ are Bilsteins, but you have to be willing to fork over some major coinage.
Monroe Sensa-Trac and Monroe Reflex are great shocks at a very reasonable price. Available at most major parts stores.
Rancho's are a very common shock used as well, also great reviews at a good price.
I'm running Skyjacker Hydro's. It is a very nice ride on and off road.

The "budget" option from rock-auto.com are horrible. I thought since they were Monroe shocks they would be good. The 200,000 mile originals with failed bushings were better shocks than the new ones that are on there now.
As a matter of fact, out of 30 parts I bought for my Jeep from rockauto.com only two survive (hatch struts, and they need help pushing the hatch up). And guess what? I only bought my Jeep in December of last year and have only put a grand total of 4000 miles on it. Every single one of the suspension parts I bought from them have been replaced again.
Sorry, turned your thread into a rockauto bash. Just wanted to point out that my experience with their suspension components hasn't been the best.

Moton 4-way adjustables.
Made in the Netherlands. They will build the shocks to your specs. Length,travel... Downside is you will wait 6 to 7 weeks after you place your
order. Quality, the best we have found...Results you bet ya,
You did say you didn't mind paying a good price right?
Hold on to your wallet. Set of 4 will run ya about 7K
I didn't mean to be a smart a__ but just to show what the range is out there.
Unless I'm gonna run the BAJA I've been happy with Monroes for the street and occasional treks offroad.
Ran Bilsteins once loved the street performance but they couldn't take the offroad stuff.
Koni is pretty much out of the auto field and going into military stuff.
I'm sure some guys will chime in on what their running. I'm interested too.

i have a 94 zj limied with the 5.2. i am still running with the stock shocks. i only have 67,008 mile on it. i did do some research and for the price i was leaning to the rancho 9000 series they are ajustable to and come with a lifetime warrenty. and just a little tip if you buy the individually from advance auto's web sit you can enter in a promo cade and get them cheaper. you can google for promo codes to.

I have Edelbrock IAS from Kolak. Contact Nick at kolak @ aol . com, he'll explain your options and get what you need for a good price.

I'd suggest a high pressure monotube shock such as Bilstein or the Edelbrock IAS. This type of shock will give you the best handling, ride control, fade resistance and most rapid responsiveness of any shock type.
PM me for pricing - I have the Bilsteins on special right now with free shipping so I think that would be the best choice.

That's not anything to do with RockAuto, though, is it? They just sell parts (the same parts as everybody else), they don't make them.
You could have bought those cheap Monroes anywhere and had the same result. RA sell cheap stuff and they sell expensive stuff - didn't you notice that their shock selection is large and categorised as "Economy", "Original Ride Quality", "Increased Handling/Performance" and "Heavy Duty/Load Assist"? Your choice. It shouldn't be rocket science as to why the shocks in the "economy" section are *much* cheaper than the shocks in the "original ride quality" section...

Bilstein's
\ thread...
FWIW, I've had my ZJ on the stock shocks, then Bilstein's w/ 2" BB, Skycrapper's w/ 5.5", and now Bilstein's at 5.5". Believe me, once you put in a set like Bilstein's then, you'll always end up back there. I've never tried the Edelbrock's, but if Nick says they're as good as the Bilstein's, then look at them too.
