Shifter console

The sliding plastic parts around the shifter and beside the drive letters is sticking and not letting this shifter move back to 2 and 1 gears. They start to buckle and could break if forced. Any suggestions?

not sure of your year but i had my console loose the other day (1996)(searching for seat heater relays),
the letter selector is a black plastic strip that slides back and forth with the shifter. the ends of the strip align with openings toward the front and rear of the shifter opening.
you should be able to pop the plastic bezel off from around the shifter (easy), and see the 'mechanism' - i imagine that yours has hung up some how and is hitting an edge/wiring/whatever

the plastic strip is quite flexible
