Shift on the fly??

I can only put my jeep in 4wd if I first put it in Park or Neutral. Is this the way it is supposed to be? If I am in drive it will shift and the dash will say it is in but it is not in.

I am assuming you have a 242 (selec-trac) transfer case? It shouldn't need it, but sometimes you do have to let the tension off of the driveshafts before the transfer case will shift. I have that problem between 4 fulltime and 2wd, but never the other way around. Hows the fluid looking in the tc? Might try draining it and putting in fresh.

The fluid is new. I just had a shop put new seals in the transfer case.
