Service 4x4 switch?? on the VIC

What the hell does that mean. I have been using my full time 4x4 lately as it is snowing in NE and now this thing comes on the VIC and is beeping at me and it is very annoying. I know that when I use part time the light on the VIC doesn't light up for that mode but does for the others. I don't care if the VIC works or not as I can look down and see what mode the x-case is in. Anyone have any ideas? BRAd

When I bought my '93 GC Limited a few months ago, I would get that warning when I shifted into 4WD (I have a NP242 transfer case). I figured it was a bad switch on the transfer case, and I bought a Factory Service Manual to troubleshoot it. Turns out that BOTH of the Transfer Case 4WD switch cables were plugged into the VIC, not just the one for the NP242. Simply unplugging the other connector fixed the problem and the VIC works fine now.... I guess someone had it apart at some time and figured that if there was a connector, it should be plugged in someplace.

There are two 4WD switch connectors on the back of the VIC (in my case in a harness coming off of it), a red one and a black one. The wiring harness from the 4WD switch has 2 connectors on it on the VIC end. Only one connector is used, depending on which TC you've got. If both connectors are plugged in, you'll get the VIC 4WD switch error message. In my case, I think it was the red connector I unplugged (it's in the service manual).
