selec-trac problems?
So i just bought my first jeep. it is a 94' grand cherokee laredo. everything is stock minus some willie rims i threw on from another jeep. when i purchased it it was in 2wd. i drove home just fine and tried putting it in 4 full time. i think in the laredo there is supposed to be a light to let u know u are in full time but it didnt come on? the light came on when i put it in part time. i was wondering if the previous owner could've broken it because he told me he left it in 4 part time ALL the time. idk much about the 4 part time but im pretty sure that it is just for "part time" hens the name. so i was wondering if the vehicle could be damaged by being left in 4part time. any help would be appreciated

wow, yeah. there is no way he could have had it in 4pt all the time, he would have blown his tcase. Maybe just the light is out? can u feel it in 4ft?

idk its kind of iffy getting it in and out.. it also grinds sometimes as im trying to put it in or out of 4wd..not sure if the grinding is normal ( i feel like it shouldn't be normal?)

nope, that def isnt normal. When i shift through the diffrent 4wd it lurches a bit changing gears but no grinding. My guess is that you need a new tcase. I would leave it in 2wd if i were you...someone correct me if im wrong i don't have much experience with it lol thats just what it sounds like

How much do you think that would run for? (without labor) I like to do work myself

zander21510 08-11-2011 10:33 AM

Well I know there are dozens of threads on it...i'm guessing you would need to find a 242 in good shape and the different parts attached to it...honestly I can't make a good educated guess :P I would search the other threads for 242 replacement.

You can get a used one from part outs on Clist or on the classifieds on here for 250 or so. Just gotta look around...if you want a new one...thats gonna run you 900+

do you put it in neutral when your trying to shift?

zander21510 08-11-2011 12:13 PM

nope, the 242 is shift on the fly, in drive under 55mph u can shift through all the high ranges..for 4lo you have to be going 2 or 3mph according to the manual. I've never gone into 4lo

Yea ive tried shifting both while moving in drive and in neutral. Do you guys think It's the transfer case that's broken because it was left in 4 part time?

Are you pulling it quickly ? Your suppose to pull the lever pretty fast otherwise it wont engage in the gear

dc775 08-11-2011 01:45 PM

actually come to think of it im not pulling it quickly, i always wondered why my buddies would pull so fast, guess you have to? but it doesnt exactly click into place.. im going to try that soon to see if i just wasnt doing it quickly enough, thank you

The time now is 09:55 AM.
