Well, it looks like today is a sad day for my jeep. my front CV joint broke to the point of it being undriveable. I got just about everything off the front axle, but then it happened. one of the hub bolts broke. While attempting to remove the bolt, I took a look underneath and I started to cry. Some of the issues I found are the following:
1. pass cv joint is going out,
2. major oil leaks in the front and rear of the engine
3. Front pump on tranny leaking
4. Tcase leaking (stupid 249)
5. Steering box is leaking badly
I have come to the conclusion i will most likely trade my jeep in on a newer pickup or SUV. But I will stay in the jeep, dodge, or possibly chevy.
First thing you do is upgrade your axles and regear them and locker it. If na pay like 250-300 bucks for an axle at a junk yard...
bigger tires and a bigger lift, no more BB.
I am sure u can get a cheap TC, i picked mine up for 50 bucks and 50 bucks to install it wasnt that bad.
As for the leaks i am in the same situation as you, i am going to get mine fixed up soon.
Steering box... pick up a new one or get one at a used one from a yunk yard.
the drivers side is totally gone. most of it is not present in the CV joint itself. The pass side, boot is almost completely gone, no more grease left. Moving the boot you can see scoring on the joint itself.
those arent too horrible.
those are all very fixable.
-just get new U joing front axle shafts
-go to the jyard and get a tcase
-find a used steering box online. you can get them for like 100 somethin
-tranny pump not sure about.
-my engine has got some minor oil leaks as well. looks like the rear main seal to me. (there are write ups all over the place to fix that)
I know there are fixes for them and all. and I am sure I can easily fix them without a doubt. But this is my DD work vehicle, I have already dumped 3g into fixing the rest of the stuff that already broke. I have a completely new cooling system, i replaced most of the accessories on the front of the engine. This CV joint I hate to say is the straw that broke the camels back
my jeep is my DD too. i havnt driven it for 2 weeks. due to a squeaky fan belt. leading me to tear down my ps pump and waiting for new parts to come in.
i also got bored and tore apart my accessory bracket and painted it, and got my rear axle and "frame" painted.
i will finally be able to drive it again tomorrow. i miss it a ton.
not worth the hassle/money unless you have much bigger tires.. i just did my box and went with a factory zj rebuilt.. much better over my 190k mile original one.
Unless you have 33's or so, the durango box is overkill.
It's a 93....you've got to expect that things will need repairs with age. Hell, my buddy has a 99 XJ that's need more parts and work at 57k than my 96 ZJ thats going to turn 163k soon. If you have already put that much money into it, selling it is pointless as you will loose it all. At least now you know it will be set for a while. Get a buddy who is into Jeeps like you (works well since me and smrtjustin go to school together and are ironically members here before we met), and have them help you out. These are all fairly simple repairs. They might not be the cheapest, but they definitely are doable.
i would fix it and keep it, to hell with a car payment when you've already got so much invested into your jeep jeep. She will last you quite a long time if you keep up on her maintenance. (thats the one thing i HATE about my jeep. If you don't keep up with fixing stuff, it will turn into an overwhelming list and you will feel like you have to get rid of it, but if you make sure to do them as they come, you will not get overwhelmed)
well I have only owned this jeep for a few mnths, since may. and the previous owner did nothing and now I am getting the snowball affect. I already have several local jeepers looking into buying it. but I am saving my 31's for my NEXT jeep. Yes I will get another jeep. but something new and with a better maintanence record thne this one.
well, good luck friend. I know how it is.. My zj is a 97 with nearly 200k on it. I bought it with 160k on it and haven't had many problems at all, but the people that owned it before me took really good care of it.
yeah the previous owner didn't even do a tune up in the 5yrs he owned it. when I got it, no windows worked, it wouldn't stay running, the power door looks didn't work, windows wouldn't roll dwn. and quite a bit of other stuff I forgot about. But the guy who is interested in buying buy's jeeps and fixes them and gives them a good home. He has 3 XJ's, 4ZJ's, 1 commanche, and lord knows what else he has.
Well, I just sold the jeep today. The guy is coming next friday to come and pick her up. :retreat:
