Rusty Luck

Hey all, first-time poster here. I just scored a 94 GC recently for free...the owner told me it's mine if i got it running.

So about $300 bucks in parts later she's running like a champ! I'm putting in a new cat converter now and I'm stuck...need help with this.

Anyone want to share some secrets on how to remove a rusted cat converter without going nutz? I've done it on my old cherokee and it was a pain but with enough muscle and wd40 it came off. This one...no budge. I've even blow-torched it for 20 mins, still nothing. Going crazy here, any advice is greatly appreciated.

*After Thought: Where I live there aren't any emissions laws. Should I just rid myself the anxiety and just hack it off, installing a straight pipe?

Glad to be a part of this community, look forward to exchanging with everyone.

Free Jeep. Bite the bullet and have a new cat installed. Laws or not a cat should be run.

thnx for the opinion, but i was more interested in someone's personal experience when dealing with this, and what they did to provide a solution to the problem.

I had enough and just hacked it off at the joints. Using the measurments from the new exhaust manifold and muffler cuts I made, I just picked up some adapter pipe pieces from the auto store. This suprisingly was the path of least resistance, and least damage to the wallet.

new cats usually come a tad long so you dont need to add any pipe.

right...but because I hacked the old cat off, the remaining pipe still stuck in manifold and muffler head blocked the new cat from fitting in. Adapter pieces allow for it to fit over old pipe instead of inside. total cost of operation under $170.00. Gotta save money when living in the most expensive place in the world!

i cut mine off back further towards the body of the old cat so that i didnt disturb my exhaust pipes then had to cut out the old pieces -- took some time but it works -

Bought a new cat and had two custom adapters made because I had the same problem after the cut off. Total cost $154.

I agree with rxl...but it seems that you had your mind made up before even posing the question.

I cut my cat out, replaced the section with straight pipe, got better gas mileage, a slighly louder troatier sound (I like) And now it smells like a go-kart. I may reinstall a cat if I get completely new exhaust though.
