Rough start, sounds like a diesel after start up until warm..

It was running a bit rough at start, got an oil change and spark plugs changed (and had SP wired inspected) about 300-400 miles ago and still sounds like crap at start up and for first 3 minutes of running, sounds fine after that. is it time for seafoam? 105K ran like a champ until this started happening. Any ideas?

Search around for "cracked piston skirt" and see if those types of descriptions match what you are hearing/experiencing.

My sister's WJ 4.slo was making a similar noise, at first it went away when warm, then it only did it under load, then it was all the time and increasingly louder... The skirt finally gave way and disconnected from the rod.

I dont hear knocking or ticking I dont think, sounds like its running rich, and the puff of smoke out the exhaust and smell of a carb'ed engine running rich is there when it starts. It's not like that on all starts, just the first one for the day or if it sits for several hours, it may or may not do it for lunch for example but if I went 9 hours it might do it then.

I'll try to get under there this weekend and drop the oil pan to check for chunks.

just for grins, try swapping the fuel pump relay with the horn or int wiper relay.

mine was doing this and fp relay fixed it.
