rim spec question

factory 15x7 with 5x4.5 bolt pattern 95 zj rim, does anyone know the backspacing?

That's the exact tire I'm questioning. Looking for a spare but am a noob other than knowing what backspacing is.. I'm just looking for any kind of rim and don't want anything to trash the VC I'm about to have replaced.. Need all new tires and need a 5th rim for a fullsized spare. It's a massive discount to have mounted at the same time

5 or 5.25", can't remember exactly which.

Gearhead31 11-14-2013 08:26 PM

EDIT: Have them all mounted to the rims at the same time.

Thanks, that's a good start. the tire places should be able to find something around there. Any idea if 1/4" diff in backspacing would be damaging to a VC longterm? the 249 is sooo bloody touchy and temperamental, I don't want to anger it. Especially with what it does to the wallet when you do make it mad =/

Gearhead,

That particular wheel is Jeep's "Teardrop", and WhiteOut is right, it is indeed 5.25" backspacing.
I doubt a quarter inch in backspacing will impact the 249 vc. Fact of the matter is that those vc's just have a shelf life from engaging/disengaging so many 1000s of times over the course of their lives. The 249 is not as bad of a case as everyone makes it seem!
(That being said, I dropped mine in favor of the 242 :D )
GL on the search,
JS

Its not going to affect the VC. I ran 33x12.50's on those rims with 1.5" spacers with my 95. Backspacing doesn't matter at all it's the tire circumference that affects the VC. All tires need to be the same and inflated to equal each other. The VC gets worn out by having one or more tires different circumferences than the rest.

Gearhead31,
why not go to an auto-wrecker, and get the same rim to match what you already have? If you can't find it locally, try car-part.com, enter your zip, and they'll tell you where one is. A used matching rim would probably be cheaper than buying a new rim that won't match what you have now.

Thanks all for the responses.
I've been looking for an identical rim but no one here(none of the 15+ used tire shops, junk yards, salvage yards, "reclaimed metal" yards, etc) have them any of the dozens of times I've tried stopping in. The few places that actually manage to get that style of rim, they tend to sell them off same day or next day of getting them in. It's one of their very high demand jeep parts. Online, I can get one for around $100. Just some random steelie rim is a second choice so I can have a fullsized spare, but I'm still looking for another 'teardrop' (thanks for that!) styled rim. Honestly, anything is better than that crappy doughnut they give ya. If it's that much of an emergency, i'll just say screw the rim and drive on a flat tire. AAA is for the minor stuff!
I never meant that the 249 was bad, I love it, I just know that it tends to be very touchy to even slight differences between tires. My question was more about if different backspacing on just the one tire would cause a similar reaction as having slightly different sized tires, due to a slightly different axle to tire edge length. I'm used to some of the dumb questions being the most important ones that weren't asked so figured what the heck, lol.

Pretty sure there's a light blue zj in the local yard with a set of those wheels on it. Where are you located?
