Reseting your milage?

How bad is it to reset the milage in the cluster? I am lookin to buy one and the guy has one with 149k miles and i have 141 on my car atm. Is it possible to mess up the gauges doing it? Ive got a 93 zj laredo

what are your reasons for wanting to reset the mileage?

even if someone here knows how i doubt they will tell you. screwing with the mileage on a vehicle is not a smart thing to do

it's not illegal till you try to sell it like that and not tell them you reset it.

Yes, there is no problem with resetting it in most states. There is a problem with selling it without telling the buyer it has been reset. Are you wanting to reset it to 0 or to the mileage of your existing cluster (141k)?

Take before and after pictures and write a letter stating the facts sign it (or have the mechanic sign it) and have it sealed by a notary.
But, I agree with Arlo. 8k don't make a difference, especially with a 14 year old Jeep.

Yes, there is a way to do it and it is very simple. Don't even have to take the dash apart. All you need is another one of the little speed sending units mounted on the trans (get from junk yard) hook it to a electric drill, plug in wire that goes to speedo and run it backwards. I have seen this done, it works.

Usually an Odometer Disclosure Statement has to be completed when the vehicle is sold. That's where you would disclose the difference between the odometer reading and the actual mileage. However, I believe that the odometer disclosure is not required for vehicles older than 10 years. You could check this with your state DOT. A prospective buyer might turn away from a vehicle with no odometer disclosure, so you need to consider that possibility.

Why are you changing it? It the current one bad? If so just change the circut board and keep the same cluster. That's what I did..
