Replaced rear main seal now low oil pressure

Searched for days did not find anything close to my issue. I had the rear main seal replaced on my 97 5.2, on the drive home I noticed the oil pressure drop to zero when we came to a stop at an intersection. Returned to shop, they changed the oil filter, and it was fine for a day, then the same zero pressure situation returned. Any ideas?

I wonder if the pickup tube is bent or not sitting in the correct position. I'd worry about this one.

Oil pickup might be sucking air.
Oil pump mating surface might be leaking.

I would take off the oil pump disassemble it -- check clearances. Reseal oil pickup thread and make sure it is tight.
Check rear bearing cap torque.

Just curious when you do come to a stop and your oil pressure reads zero does the engine start making a lot more noise with rocker-arms tapping?

If not the point is they may have broken something loose in the oil causing your sending unit to become clogged. It may be worth installing a mechanical gauge on the oil sending unit port before tearing clear into it.

I've also seen defective oil filters but that was many many years ago where now most good ones have an oil bypass if the flow in the oil filter is restricted.

Just hitting on some of the things before tearing into it and the problems could be internal with the pump or bearing torque as others mentioned.

If you took it to a shop to have the rear main seal replaced and immediately have oil pressure problems I suspect that the problem was caused by the shop that did the work.

Why aren't you insisting that they correct their mistake?

I just read through the FSM on changing the rear main seal on a 5.2. I did not know that the oil pump had to be removed to do the job. It seems to be quite a coincidence (KO-INKY-DINK) that you lose oil pressure right after the pump was pulled and re-installed.

Different engines destroy themselves at different rates when there is no oil pressure.

But they ALL destroy themselves.

DO NOT START THIS JEEP.

UNPLUG THE BATTERY SO NO ONE CAN.

Get it towed.

When oil pressure drops the action you take is to IMMEDIATELY turn of the engine.

DO NOT WAIT TILL YOU GET HOME.

DO NOT WAIT TO SEE IF IT IMPROVES

DO NOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT INTERSECTION.

Buy AAA towing online tonight and use it in the morning. Save $$$ and you can use it for the rest of the year for free.

Update: Shop diagnosed the oil sending unit as faulty, they replaced it, all is well to date
